Student Enrolment Challenges in Abu Dhabi Education Sector: A Design Thinking Opportunity

United Arab Emirate (UAE), with its capital Abu Dhabi, in decades has evolved as a prominent destination for tourism and residence by global citizens. The quality of life, security and scope of economic activity offered by Abu Dhabi has attracted investors from various backgrounds to invest in various economic sectors of the emirate. Although Abu Dhabi has an interventionist approach to entrepreneurial ventures, nothing has been able to stop the emirate from being a pioneer in all sectors, most prominently educational sector. Although Abu Dhabi gains power and control due to its oil reserves, the thrust the government of Abu Dhabi lays of education is looked up with awe by global leaders worldwide. The government of Abu Dhabi has included education as its national priority as the 4th priority element in the Sustainability and Development Goals of the capital. Despite the boost of the government there is a fall in student enrolment numbers in the federal driven institutions in the past years when compared to non-federal institutions which highlights a gap to be governed, which if not attended on time may lead to federal institutions be perceived weak in governing learner satisfaction. This case highlights Abu Dhabi as a prominent hub to higher education sector with focus on enrolment trends of students in federal and non-federal higher educational institutions.
